Below is information on the types of rental assistance available in Montana. These programs are available through local housing authorities and Human Resource Development Councils (HRDCs). Click on the Find Affordable Rental Housing to find the Rental Assistance/Section 8 provider or affordable rental units in your area.

Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)
The Section 8 Vouchers come in three forms

1. Tenant-based vouchers

2. Project-based vouchers

3. Moderate-Rehabilitation (Mod-Rehab) vouchers.

All three provide rental assistance so that the rent and utilities you pay is usually limited to 30% of your income. To sign up for any of these programs please contact your local housing authority or HRDC.

USDA Rural Development's Multi-Family Housing Database
Rural Development subsidizes apartments for low-income individuals and families in all areas of Montana except Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, and Missoula. Rural Development maintains a database of these apartments searchable by county, city, or zip code, and it includes a picture, a map, and contact information for each apartment building. HUD Subsidized Apartment Search
HUD subsidizes apartments for low-income individuals and families across Montana through its Section 8 Project-based Voucher program. HUD maintains a database of these apartments searchable by location, bedroom size, and category of housing.
