Energy Assistance

For a complete list of contacts and weather assistance in Montana, the Department of Energy offers this site.

Weatherization
This program, administered by the Montana Department of Health and Human Services (DPHHS), is designed to help low-income persons reduce their heating costs by increasing the energy efficiency of their home. Apply through your local Human Resource Council (HRC) or Human Resource Development Council (HRDC). A complete statewide list of HRC's and HRDC's is also available here.

Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP)
This financial assistance is available to renters and homeowners to pay energy bills from October 1st to April 30th. Eligibility is based on income and is limited to those earning below 150% of the poverty level. Contact your local HRC or HRDC to apply. For a complete statewide list of HRC's and HRDC's click here.

Energy Share
This is one-time financial assistance distributed based on need, and it can be used towards a bill or an emergency repair. Apply through your local HRC or HRDC. For a complete statewide list of HRC's and HRDC's click here.

Energy Company Discounts

         . Northwestern Energy
"Customers who qualify for the federally-funded Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), automatically receive a 15 percent discount on their NorthWestern Energy electric and natural gas bills. The year-round NorthWestern Energy discount begins when the customer signs up and qualifies for LIEAP." To apply click here.

         . Flathead Electric Cooperative
"To be eligible for this program, residential members must qualify as low-income according to the guidelines set by LIEAP (150% of poverty). Eligible members will receive a credit equal to half the basic charge on their bill each month for twelve months. In most cases this would be a credit of $8.00 per month. Members qualifying with LIEAP after October 1 will automatically be eligible. Those not on the LIEAP program must qualify by signing a verification from that they are within the same low-income eligibility guidelines. Members' accounts will receive the credit on the next bill processed after we are notified of income status (either by LIEAP or a signed from). All recipients of this program must reapply each year."
